Windy Hill is a section of North Myrtle Beach in the coastal region of South Carolina that draws thousands of tourists every year. Beaches, lively nightlife and golf tournaments keep the area busy throughout the seasons. Windy Hill Beach is a prime location, allowing visitors a chance to stay near water activities, entertainment venues and fine dining opportunities.

Beaches

The city of North Myrtle Beach claims six miles of beaches strung together along the Atlantic Ocean. Windy Beach joins Crescent Beach, Ocean Drive Beach and Cherry Grove Beach to form one large aquatic playground for residents and visitors. Water activities are abundant, including surfing, kayaking, sailing, para-sailing and banana boat rides. Horseback riding is allowed on the beach, with trained guides and tours. A giant inflatable water-slide is located between First and Second Avenues South, with all-day wristbands available at Ocean Park. Anglers have fishing choices that range from pier fishing to offshore, surf fishing and deep-sea fishing excursions.

Barefoot Landing

About a mile from the beach at Windy Hill, visitors can find myriad entertainment opportunities at the world-renowned Barefoot Landing. The boardwalk runs along the Intracoastal Waterway, with a fishing dock and dozens of trendy restaurants, theaters and boutique shops. The village structure of the landing is centered around a 27-acre lake that is home to migratory waterfowl and various species of fish and wildlife. The Alabama Theater (alabama-theatre.com) holds live music concerts, while a ghost theater offers nightly ghost and psychic walks. An enormous old-fashioned carousel keeps the kids happy, as do a mirror maze and fireworks on the boardwalk.

Dining

Beachside cafes are a common site on the coastal strips near Windy Hill, many retaining a “mom and pop” feel to them. International cuisine has gained popularity, with several versions of Italian, Indian and Thai food available. Bars and lounges proliferate along the shoreline, offering additional dining options such as regional BBQ and Irish food, beer and whiskeys. Greg Norman’s Australian¬†Grill¬†(gregnormansaustraliangrille.com) brings cuisine from “down under” to North Myrtle Beach, with aboriginal artwork and an Australian theme throughout the restaurant. As a world-famous golfer and winner of numerous world championship titles, the owner also runs a small golf store at the restaurant, offering upscale golf clothing to the thousands of golfers who converge on the Myrtle Beach area every year.

Cruises

A variety of sightseeing and themed cruises depart from the coastline at North Myrtle Beach throughout the year, including a pirate cruise that coincides with an annual pirate festival. The Great American River Boat Company (mbriverboat.com) offers dinner and sunset cruises that float through the Intracoastal Waterway, entertaining guests with live music, dancing and colorful stories of the region’s history. Blues cruises are scheduled periodically, encouraging families to come on-board for jam sessions with some of the area’s blues musicians and performers.

Alligator Adventure

One of the world’s largest reptile parks is located near Windy Hill, at Dockside Village in Barefoot Landing. More than 800 alligators and crocodiles make their home at Alligator Adventure, as do rare exotic snakes, Galapagos and pig-nosed turtles, African bullfrogs, lizards, tropical birds and komodo dragons. Alligator Adventure also features Siberian tigers, bobcats and lemurs. Depending on the season, visitors can view live alligator feedings, as well as snake and alligator handling demonstrations.
